You are Completely Unique and Absolutely Necessary

As you live your life, there are so many challenges that you can lose sight of how absolutely miraculous Life is and how unique and necessary you are.

To open again to the joy of these truths, I want to share with you something that may be a little uncomfortable at first, but if you stay with it, will bring you wonderful gifts.  In each male ejaculation, there are from forty million to one and half billion sperm!  And each woman has around 2 million eggs stored in her ovaries.  To keep it somewhat manageable, let’s say that when your parents made love there were only half billion sperm that relentlessly swam towards an egg.  And of those half billion sperm, only one of them united with one of your mothers 2 million eggs.  Pause for a moment and let that in.

I wish I was a mathematician, so I could show the probabilities of you, the unique person that you are, actually being given the gift of life in this teaming world of possibilities.  They are infinitesimal!  In the vastness of all time and space, you are alive! And your life is a completely unique creation. There has never before been a person like you and there never will be again.  Also, no matter what you think about yourself, you are necessary.  If you doubt that, contemplate the question, “Which cell in your heart is not important?”  Life knew what it was doing when it gave you the gift of life.

And such a gift it is. The Buddha said that to be given the gift of human life is as rare as if there were only one golden hoop that floated on the seven seas of the world with only one turtle swimming in these seven seas, and only once every hundred years did the turtle surface, and it surfaced through the golden hoop!!  Even with all the challenges you may be experiencing such as difficulties with relationships, a health problem that is limiting you, a financial crisis, a compulsion that seems to control your life, you are still being given the amazing gift of life.

So, for this moment, let go of focusing on all the stories in your head and be here for your life.  Feel the warmth of your body, the beating of your heart, the rising and falling of your breath.  In this moment you are paying attention to the phenomenal gift of Life.  Now focus on the life all around you.  This is it!  This is the only moment where you can be truly alive.

For today, give yourself moments where you recognize how infinitely precious you are, how precious this moment is and what a precious gift you have been given – the gift of life, right here and right now.
