Your Amazingly Powerful and Beautiful Heart

Science is now discovering you have three main brains. Your whole body is a field of intelligence, but it is focused in three main areas we call brains. The first is your head brain, the one you are most used to living in. The second is your gut brain and studies have now shown how intricately interconnected your gut brain is with your head brain. The third is your heart brain.

Study after study has shown that your heart is your main brain! It has a complex and elaborate neural circuitry that allows it to function independently of your head brain. It can learn, remember, feel and sense. It can grow new neurons and make new neuronal connections and can learn and change in the course of a lifetime. It also secretes and uses neuro-hormones such a dopamine and norepinephrine, once thought to only exist in the head brain. It also secretes oxytocin, the bonding hormone, and concentrations of it are found to be as high in the heart as those in your head brain. It perceives, assimilates and processes information, plus it has memory storage and access.

And yet most of us don’t have access to our heart brain.  It wasn’t safe for your wise, sensing and sensitive heart brain to be open when you were growing up. You had to close it and rely just on your head brain to maneuver through your life.

The nature of your head brain is dualistic:

  • it likes and dislikes
  • it thinks this is good and that is bad
  • it compares and judges
  • it loves to be right and hates to be wrong
  • it is always trying to get what it wants and get rid of what it doesn’t want.

This is the game of struggle and it is where most human beings live. If you look at history, you will see what comes from having the head brain be our main guide. Your head brain is not bad or wrong. It is a phenomenally intelligent tool for maneuvering through your life, but it is a painful master.

The nature of your heart brain is inclusive:

  • It has room for everything.
  • It connects rather than controls
  • It responds rather than reacts
  • It unites rather than divides
  • It honors the unfolding of your life rather than trying to make it be what you think it should be. It also knows the perfection of whatever Life is offering you in this moment.

Some of its astoundingly healing qualities are kindness, compassion, love, allowing, acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, inclusion, gentleness, appreciation, caring, empathy, openness, softening, spaciousness, mercy, being ‘for’ rather than ‘against’, joy, willingness, equanimity, receptivity. The truth is, your heart brain is much more powerful than your head brain.

With everything you long for (relationships, better health, money, success), what you truly long for is to come home to your heart. All true, lasting healing happens in the heart – your healing, the healing of your loved ones and the healing of our whole planet. At the end of your life, your gratitude won’t be for all the things and experiences you had. It will be for how deeply your heart was opened by life.

So be willing for just a few moments to place your hand on the center of your chest and ask life to show you the pathway back to living from your wise and beautiful heart.

  1. Thank you, Mary. You seem to know our struggles and challenges. Today this was so enlightening as I begin a NEW week after a few very stressful ones, this will be a daily reminder of healing and comfort❤
